Effective Anger Management Games
![]() |
What in the world do games have to do with managing anger? Plenty -- in fact, anger management games can be a fun and effective way to learn the skills you need to deal with your anger issues. While they can be ideal for adults, especially in group settings like seminars and classes, they are especially helpful for youngsters. Games can provide a learning experience for kids in such a way that they don't even realize they are learning. Because most every child enjoys playing games, this can be a great way to help them understand anger management techniques.
As an example, a game that teaches coping skills may involve a group of children that compete in a game of chance for a limited number of prizes. A game such as this may involve dice. One scenario is that each child rolls two dice and the ones that roll doubles get a prize while the others do not. After the game the teacher can discuss certain points about anger and frustration with the children. Such as, how did they feel when another child got a prize and they didn't? If you feel angry about the outcome of this game, what do you think is the best way to deal with those feelings? With games like these, children learn that things may not always go the way they want but that there are appropriate ways to deal with their anger.
Games designed for adults may be more complex and may even involve roleplaying. For example, at a seminar you may be put into groups or pairs and made to act out particular scenarios. In one scenario, you might be asked to express anger inappropriately, then you might repeat the exercise and express the anger in an effective and appropriate way. Roleplaying exercises help adults practice reactions and responses before dealing with 'the real thing.' And, these exercises help others in the group observe such interactions so they can learn what works and what doesn't.
Anger management games can be found in many workbooks that deal with the subject of anger. You can also ask your therapist to recommend some games if you cannot find them on your own. Attending a seminar or class may also introduce you to some helpful activities. When paired with other effective strategies like cognitive behavior therapy, these activities can accelerate and enhance progress. Kids and adults alike can benefit from the use of games in their anger management therapy.
